What Your Child Learns in Level 3

Your child will learn exciting new concepts, including the jobs of Silent E, new phonograms, and methods for decoding multisyllable words – and continue to establish a firm foundation for a lifetime of learning. Every component of reading is taught: Phonological Awareness, Phonics and Decoding, Vocabulary, Fluency, and Reading Comprehension. Below is a sampling in each area.

Decoding (Phonics)

  • Learn phonograms AI, AY, OA, IR, UR, OO, EA, IGH, TCH, DGE, EW, WR, KN, EIGH, OE, and TI
  • Read words containing the new phonograms, such as paint, play, boat, third, purple, soon, mean, light, match, budge, flew, wrong, know, sleigh, toe, and action
  • Read words with Pickle syllables, as in bubble and table

Decoding (Structural Analysis)

  • Identify base words
  • Read words with vowel suffixes, as in fastest, and consonant suffixes, as in gladly
  • Read words with prefixes, as in mistake
  • Learn syllable division rules for reading multisyllable words

Vocabulary

  • Discuss new words in the context of the story and one’s own life
  • Understand homophones
  • Understand synonyms, antonyms, onomatopoeia, alliteration, similes, idioms, and personification

Fluency

  • Read with accuracy
  • Read with meaningful expression
  • Read with natural phrasing

Comprehension

  • Connect text to one’s own experiences
  • Make predictions
  • Compare and contrast main characters
  • Skim for specific information

Our Placement Tests help you to determine the level that is the most appropriate for your child to begin with in our programs. Please note that our lessons are mastery-based, not grade-level-based.
